I'd just like to know, why in it's FD incarnations, they could get the 1.4 to look through a 55 and 52mm filter, but with the EF it's got to use 58mm?

The barrel on the 50/1.4 is larger due to the built-in motor. Also, it uses the same filter size as the 24/2.8, 28/1.8, 85/1.8, 100/2, and 100/2.8 USM Macro.

Then again, the Carl Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 for the Contax N is the biggest 50/1.4 lens I've seen. 67mm filters are needed for this lens (I suspect that Kyocera's motors are much bigger than the ones used by Canon).
