Alex is correct. You'll need to put the 550(s) in manual mode to meter or the E-TTL preflash will trip the meter and give you incorrect readings. I've done it quite a few times and it works just as well as with my Alien Bees.
Mike I never did, but my guess would be the necessity to switch the camera to a manual metering mode, set flash to manual either (full or a fraction of the power) and let determine the correct exposure settings by the flashmeter. I think you cannot use TTL (and obviously not ETTL) once working with flashmeter.
