Probably not very useful help, but similar considerations (plus the 
fact that I wouldn't pay the full sticker price for anything less 
than a full-size chip) made me buy a DCS3.
I wanted the overall mechanical 
quality/performance/ergonomy/longlivity/robustness of an EOS-1(n) 
(already had 2 EOS-1's, still ogling with an 1n-RS)), but not a price 
triple or quadruple of it's analog brother, since I only really 
needed it for web-shots....:))

And one generation later, the DCS520/560 (latter aka Canon D2000), 
would still be an alternative to me, compared to a 10D today.
Did you consider a used 10D at all, btw?
Paying new-price for such fast-depreciating stuff is a tad 
sadomasochistic, especially if you haven't found your ideal camera 
yet....a used one for a steal-price feels much better....;))
