I have had no problems with a 380EX on my D30, the thing you need to remember is that the E-TTL flash metering on Canon digital SLR's is pretty abysmal, unless you use FEL, FEC and look at the results religiously on the LCD. I haven't seen that the 420EX does a much better job in similar situations.


I'd take a pretty serious look at the Nikon D70, just for close-in flash photos since it uses the Nikon D-system (eg, guide number and distance to subject weigh heavily on the calculation) to determine flash exposure... I have been hearing similar complaints about flash exposure from Digital Rebel owners.
