I have owned and used quite a few IS lenses...  300/4L IS, 28-135IS,
100-400IS, 70-200/2.8IS and 300/2.8IS. Let me just say right off that the IS
on all these lenses works magnificently. Quite honestly I do not detect any
difference in effectiveness between the 28-135 and 70-200 even though the
later is supposed to have X-generation IS.

Even with the 300/2.8L IS which is supposed to automatically detect a stable
platform I still find it best to turn it off when really on a rock solid
tripod.

In my opinion IS is one of the greatest recent developments in lens design.
It has allowed me to take sharp hand-held shots that would have otherwise
been impossible.
