If I use a 1.4x tele-converter on a 400mm lens, does the depth of field
behave like a 400mm or a 560mm lens?

It behaves like a 560mm lens, but remember the aperture changes, and if you do not have a Canon TC the display will not report the true f/stop. For example, a 400/5.6 wide open with a 1.4 TC is for all purposes, a 500/8.


Using the DOF calculator at http://www.outsight.com/hyperfocal.html (the near-far section) shows that at a focus distance of 40 feet, DOF with a 400/5.6 is 11.9 inches, with a 560/8 it's 8.5", and with a 560/5.6 it would be six inches.
