Hi Leeuwtje,

When I went digital early last year I had to reconsider my lens system all
over again and make adjustments to it due to the differences in the new FOV
they would have on EOS 1D and EOS 1Ds bodies. At the time I some of the
best Canon primes and zooms including: EF 15 2.8, EF 20 2.8USM, EF 24 2.8 EF
35 2, EF 50 1.8 series I, EF 50 1.4USM, EF 85 1.8USM, EF 135 2L, EF 300
2.8L, EF 300 4L IS, EF 28-105 3.5-4.5USM, EF 17-35 2.8L, EF 28-70 2.8L, EF
70-200 2.8L, EF 1.4X and EF 2X converters.

For what I shot at the time (mostly motorsports, yacht racing, music
personalities, "lifestyle", corporate), when I did my re-think I considered
the EOS 1D's 1.3 crop and EOS 1Ds FF sensors and which body I would normally
use for what type of shooting. I finally updated and simplified my lens
system keeping only the best, most essential (to me!), and buying new "key"
lenses, here's what I wound up with: EF 15 2.8, EF 50 1.4USM, EF 85 1.8USM,
EF 300 2.8L (EF 28-105USM for an EOS 1 I use on the street/beach), EF 16-35
2.8L, EF 28-70 2.8L, EF 70-200 2.8L IS, EF 1.4X and EF 2X II converters.

If you are buying a Canon DSLR and you want to use the EF 135 2L for
portraits you may want to reconsider. I loved my EF 135 2L on film bodies,
this was probably my sharpest lens and IMO second only to the EF 200 1.8L I
sometimes rented. If you are going to buy a Canon consumer DSLR the EF 135
2L gives you a 35mm equivalent FOV of 216mm, even on an EOS 1D a 135mm has a
35mmEFOV of 175mm. Normally 216mm or 175mm focal lengths are much too long
for portraits, this is not to say that it's always the case. I have used
the EF 300 2.8L for portraits sometimes if I have the room or am shooting
outdoors. Anyway shooting mostly with my trusty old EOS 1D I'm very happy
with the EF 85 1.8USM with its 35mmEFOV of 110mm, not far from one of my old
favorites for portraits, a 105mm Nikon.
