Yes it is incompatible. The flash only supports TTL not E-TTL and the 300D like most of the digital bodies only supports E-TTL, not TTL or A-TTL. Everyone presumes that the problem is that TTL and A-TTL use off the film metering and off the CMOS sensor doesn't work as well. You should be able to use the flash by putting both the camera and flash into manual mode and selecting an appropriate aperture for the subject distance. (i.e. working the old fashioned way.)
