I have a D60 and also have no problems:

I have things set up (in AF) so that a finger on the shutter activates AF
and a thumb on the
AE lock button on the back actually locks AF. I never shoot single frame,
ever. Everything is AI servo - and usually manual focus, although sport,
as in this case, it has to be AF.
