Interestingly, I could deal with a bit heavier but not bigger.
In particular the non-removable vertical handle in the 1D
series is a total show-stopper for about 80% of my shooting,
or rather camera-carrying: I can (and frequently do) hike
for a week with EOS 3 or 10D in a waist bag, but not with
vertical grip attached. It just pushes the weight too far
from my body to be manageable.

I agree. The main blocking point for me in buying the 1D series is the size and weight. They're simply too heavy for me. The 10D and EOS-3 are roughly the same weight, which still hurts my wrists after a day of heavy shooting. The 100g lighter 20D sounds good. If they had a 3D with all of the features of the 1D but in a smaller package, I'd spend $4500 for it.

I've switched to shooting on a Leica M7 because I've wanted a lighter weight package than the EOS system.
