Ken:
The reasons I think spot metering is not so important
isn't strictly a digital thing.
First, I think that Canon's evaluative metering has
gotten so good that it's very rare that spot metering
is necessary with digital or film.
Second, with the essentially zero cost of each
exposure on digital, when you shoot difficult scenes
bracketing becomes a no-brainer.

Can't really control it in development with 35mm
anyway, unless you're shooting an entire roll of one
subject. And if you're shooting color, you really
can't control by development at all.
It's a lot easier to do this with the histogram
function during image review, anyway.

Exposure bracketing and the histogram, I think, make
this essentially unnecessary.

Actually, I have no idea. I do know that as long as I
don't blow the highlights out by overexposing, I can
pull a remarkable amount of detail out of scenes with
a wide range of tones. And the blnking highlight on
the review screen makes blown highlights obvious while
you still have a chance to fix it.
