Your guess is as good as mine as to when the 300D will
be upgraded. Given that the Nikon D70 seems to offer
significantly more at the same price, I wouldn't be
surprised to see Canon update it as soon as they can.

Buying used, if you can, helps protect your
investment--you probably won't lose as much money if a
replacement is introduced as you would buying a new
one. 

Finally, as long as you can live with the limits on
shooting speed, the 300D is a very capable camera. 
There are even software hacks you can apply that turn
on some of the missing functionality (compared to a
10d).  The link was posted on the list a while back.
