At my uni i've been the president of the student photographic society for a
couple of years now, and at the Freshers Fayre, when people signup,
although we do get the 'I got a new x MP nice silver anti-red-eye camera,
can i still join?' type of questions i have to say that a big 'selling
point' is that we do have a reasonably well equiped darkroom and the
majority of people are interested in it. We also give them a free BW film
upon joining.
Now how many of them actually do come to the induction sessions and how many
actually use it is another matter :)

I believe however it is a great way to learn about photography and the
nature and physics of it. True, some people are put off by the chemicals,
different dev/printing steps etc, but i doubt those people will shoot
anything more interesting than a couple of ducks at their local park.

Sad to see Ilford go. Suddenly the bottom shelf of my fridge becomes more
interesting...quite a few ilfords there at the mo... :)
