It's perfectly possible to wear out the batteries without taking a single picture by using it with an IS lens as binocular substitute. I've sometimes done that, staring through the camera with 100-400L IS attached, taking very few pictures - sometimes none all day. (Of course when I'm a week away from power sources I don't do that and get 500+ pictures per battery.) Also, if you spend a lot of time viewing the pictures on the lcd panel, it will also eat batteries.
