Xmm, this is something bothered me in the past also.
In fact, neither of AF camera manufacturers can boast by the focusing
layout in the viewfinder covering entire area of the finder, and this
is what has dissapointed me a while ago. Often the situation raises
where an AF performance would be highly desired at the frame angles or
towards outer frame boundaries and the only solution could be either
manual focusing (thanks to God, Canon's USM allows instant one) or
recomposing.
I also dreamed about an AF reliable system that offers AF over entire
viewfinder area all the way towards frame boundaries. Perhaps one will
be born in some future.
However, I learnt not to underestimate Canon's 45 AF points system of
my EOS-3, even though in all but sport applications use CF that
restricts to 11 manually-selected points. In fact, I found the AF area
covered by 45-points system provides the widest AF covering area
available today among modern AF SLRs. The reason of these points not to
be spread out over the entire finder area might be hidden in the
technical complication of achieving stable AF tracking performance
while passing the subject between different AF points. I suspect to
achieve the kind of AF tracking performance that has earned many
regards among sport shooters in their EOS-3/1V and their digital
siblings could only be possible by placing multiple AF sensors tightly
close to each other.
Perhaps in some future the technology will allow a stable AF tracking
over the entire viewfinder area without sacirificing the area
coverage...
regards, Alex
