I think the technology already exists. I have an old(about 6 years old)Hi8mm
Canon camcorder and in that I am able to AF anywhere on the viewfinder. It
has a small square box in the middle which is the AF point. And I can move
that box around anywhere in the viewfinder with a small joystick at the back
of the camera. 

Don't know enough about the technology to wonder if it is transferable to
the EOS.
