I'm glad to read how well the EOS 1V/1D/1DmkII/1Ds meet your needs and I certainly 
understand the need for maximum AF performance and accuracy among pros.  I also 
understand most sports, architectural, and advertising photographers probably see rule 
of thirds as a waste of space (and I agree).  However, I think most other situations 
-- particularly landscape, nature, and often PJ, benefit from rule of thirds 
composition.  Since you brought up math, my proposed focusing point expansion puts a 
focusing point 33 percent from the top, bottom, left, and right.  That leaves 66 
percent of the viewfinder without focusing points.  I'm even ok with that because my 
proposal of having focusing points at those intersections would populate only the 
center most 34 percent of the sensor/mirror/viewfinder.  I think most lenses will 
perform pretty darned well at the center-most 34 percent to meet all of our needs.
