The interesting thing is that it has a dual mode sensor, that can be used as 12.4 MP, for quality, or as 8 MP for speed. Although at 12.4 MP this is larger than the 1DS, it is still a 1.5 multiplier, like all Nikons.
Actuallly, the reduced MP count is about 6.8, not 8. And it increases the crop factor to 2X!
Wow, that would be awesome for sports or bird shooting.

As Bob has already said, it is just the same as cropping afterwards. The advantage is that the smaller files do not take as long to save.
