It looks to me that Canon's reasoning for this is/was, if somebody doesn't want to fiddle with camera settings, they probably don't want to go through the "hassle" of having to convert RAW files either. Need I say "snapshooter"?

I prefer to look at this as a feature rather than a bug. If I have my camera configured with a complex series of custom functions, I can quickly change to a Basic Zone mode just as if I have two cameras in one.
