Same here, I had numerous lock up over the past 4 years with EOS-3 and
EF100-400, since none of my other EF lenses do this, I assumed it's the
EF100-400, slightly turning the lens off the fully mounted position and
remount it resets it.

But there was no lock up, not even one in over 6,000 shots in the past 3
months with this particular EF100-400 mounted my 1D Mk II, I almost begin to
think maybe it was a weird combination of the EOS-3 and the EF100-400, then
I got a loaner EF100-400 from Canon when my own lens is in for the binding
manual focusing repair, and the loaner locked up two or three times in 500
shots with the DSLR.

Very bizarre
