Hey Bob T! The EF 300 2.8L shades are very hard to find used. I found a good EF 300 2.8L locally at an attractive price that turned out to be missing the front lens shade. It had not been dropped but the shade was stolen along with the case and several other lenses. I almost made the mistake of buying it sans the shade. But before I bought it I had the chance to look for a used shade for a LONG time and never found one that was serviceable. I did find two but they were both in such poor condition that I could not even cut off the whole front end and just use the base to make a new shade from! I wanted to use the original shade's base hardware and simply buy a carbon fiber or aluminum tube cut to length, paint it and finish the business end with a rubber covered edging. Short of finding a good used shade or a usable damaged shade (and making a new front portion for the shade), it's far cheaper and faster to just buy a new one rather than trying to make your own from scratch. It seems that when people drop a 300 2.8 the shades are usually destroyed along with the front lens barrel and protective front glass. I have an original hood for dimensions is you need to have one fabricated locally. Good luck!
