I can't help you with specifics but what I can suggest is you get
some magazines from the news stand and look at the professional
shots. What angle is used? Where is the horse frozen? I know from
other similar types of shots, owners often have a particular "type"
of photo they are looking for....legs outstretched...or maybe it's
just as the horse is directly over the jump....of course, if you are
doing this for personal artistic enjoyment, shoot from where ever you
want, but if it is for professional sales to magazines and
contestants, you should be aware that to some degree there may be
some "required" formulaic shots that you should be aware of.
Magazines and associated web pages on the subject should point you to
the main variety of shots. Most sports are like this to some degree.
The very best shots are always unique, but to most animal owners that
are showing and competing, there are specific things things that make
for a saleable image. Try to look at magazine covers and such to
learn what those shots look like and in addition to your own creative
interpretations, be sure to get that coverage if you are doing this
professionally. ( I can't imagine you'll be allowed to use flash..
:) )
