Many things:
* Higher overall median incomes
* More convoluted distributor networks
* Smaller market size w/ larger overhead
* Japanese catalogues/brochures for products are much nicer than American ones
* Someone has to pay for all the girls in miniskirts at the product shows
* More adhesion to Minimum Advertised Price
* etc. etc.
