Sorry to read of your near catastrophe, but glad you averted it with some
quick reactions.

For me, straps are a blessing and a nightmare. Basically, I wanted what
you want, but could not find anything satisfactory, so came up with my
own solution. I first used it with a Pentax LX, and now the system has
migrated over to digital with me. Rather than explain it, I've rattled
off a few shots, URL below.

The only thing you won't be happy with is that the strap connectors are
heavy duty nylon and not metal - but I have not had a problem, and weight
tested them by hanging 25 lbs from them! The actual connection at the
camera on one side (as you will see) is still heavy woven fabric -
actually an old Pentax cloth strap that I have cut and sewn into place.
It has lasted 2 cameras and 2 + years so far and not faltered. The
chafing caused by dangling large lenses (inc 70-200 2.8 L IS plus 2X
converter) is negligible.
