My 10D shows 162 with a freshly formatted 1GB, 100 ISO, and RAW/small jpg. Perhaps if you're only getting 130, there's something else wrong. If Canon's 'format software' only erased files in the DCIM folder, and you have some other files in the root, that might explain an apparent loss in capacity.

162 vs. 160 is not much difference. Different brands of cards will show different capacities. My Sandisk Extreme show two more RAW files available on the 20D than the Lexar, and 4 less than the microdrive. All nominally 1Gb.

The 130 (my number) is for the D60 and Lexar card, and is RAW plus medium jpeg. Not small.

As mentioned before; higher compression is usually achievable at the expense of some speed. Maybe the choice with the Canon 10D was to go for greater compression. It's hard to know, because the variables are greater than we have data.

Freshly formatted cards should have no files other than maybe a couple of empty directories. The directory information, FAT files etc are not 'files' in the usual sense and do not change in size.

In the end, I just put in a card, preferably as fast a one as possible, and shoot until full. If I use my cards and get inconvenienced too much by running out of cards and needing to take time out to download them onto my laptop or digital wallet, I buy more cards. At $100US per 1Gb for a fast card, there's no point in being short a card. In that vein, I intend to get a couple of 2Gb cards next week. Then I should be good to go for a while.
