There does seem to be a rather drastic range of sample
to sample variation with the 17-85. Actually, there
seems to be a rather significant sample to sample
variation in many Canon lenses these days, including
'L' zooms.
I've been shooting Canon since pre AF days (starting
with an FTb, fwiw), and I'm becoming very concerned
about Canon's level of quality control. I've got a
major investment in Canon glass, but I'm not
completely unwilling to replace it if push comes to
shove. If Canon isn't careful it's going to start
losing the commanding market lead it worked so hard to build.
