Thanks very much to those who took the time to explain the two acronyms! Which takes me to another question: I can upgrade to Photoshop Elements 3.0 for $80 or Photoshop CS for $300. I would classify myself as an avid amatuer who is just getting into digital. I've played around with Elements 2.0 (came with the 10D), but not sure which to get.
Some time ago I had a problem with Elements 2.0. When I called Adobe I mentioned that I wish I could afford the full blown Photoshop. The guy I was talking with told me that Elements had everything I would probably need as a serious amateur. I don't remember all that went into that comment but Elements has been enough for me so far.
