Hi,

Whilst I was on a studio portrait course a month or so ago I remember the
tutor mentioning something about needing to alter the aperture that has been
"indicated" on the flash exposure meter when using a Digital camera. As I
was shooting film at the time I didn't pay attention but now I am
auditioning canon cameras for my new studio and wanted to recall this info.

So if the meter says f8 etc for film... What do I use for digi?

There is no difference between film and digital in the manner your tutor described. With digital, lighting is essentially the same. Essentially because there is a somewhat different workflow. Neither involve needing to change the aperture because you are shooting digital. You may choose to chimp the final setup and open up to "expose to the right", or you might keep the aperture as it is and bump up all the lights to expose to the right. Doubt that's what was being referred to though.
Short version, if the meter is reflective (camera meter) and it says f8, then use it if the subject is grey, EH? Change it to make the subject darker or lighter just as you would with film, or crank the lights up or down to place the histogram where you want it. If you are using an incident meter you won't "interpret" the reading. Use it as it is, setting each light in turn or the whole group, and then chimp the histogram and expose to the right. :) bada bing
Now if any one can tell me how to keep my muslins wrinkle free, travelling to locations, I'll buy you a beer when you're next in town. I did a recent shoot with a muslin that got wrinkled before the shoot and I'm not happy. :) No matter how I fold a 12x20 sheet, it wrinkles. I've taken to bringing a steamer with me to locations and having an assistant steam any wrinkles out as we set up. I'd prefer to arrive with no wrinkles. I may try another vendor for my next sets of muslins.
