another funny thing is that even now, after discovering this problem with the 2CR5, the 1N seems to work fine with the PDB-E1. Normal. As nothing happened
My guess is tha the microswitch or sensor that detects when the grip is attached is malfunctioning, so the camera always thinks the grip (with its higher voltage) is attached. I don't have that camera model, but I would look inside the battery compartment (where the grip contacts slide into) and try to see if there is a microswitch. If there is, try exercising it with the tip of a pen a couple of times.
Otherwise, use a VERY LONG q-tip and clean the gold-colored contact pads inside the battery compartment with some contact cleaner (available at Radioshack etc). This is a good idea regardles of whether you're having battery problems or not.
