Ken, your memory is mostly correct. I often use a bounce flash (off the ceiling) in conjuction with the umbrella flash. Depends on the situation and environment I'm in. If the conditions are right, I'll use a bounce flash in combination with and umbrella-mounted flash (again, talking about the Canon-specific 550EX flash, in regards to this particular discussion).
