No doubt about it, the 1.8 gives more bang for the buck than any other lens in the lineup. Its nearly as good as a 1.4. But the 1.4 is still a better lens in absolute terms, especially with color rendition and bokeh. Tom sent a link to the photo.net page http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/. I know I get a very nice quality to my photographs with the 1.4 and this page shows that the 1.8 might not have been so satisfying.
