Hmmm...for many years, I was led to believe it was not just slow, but
also rather soft....wide-open that is (why else buy one)....and no
problem at all for the typical portrait photographer of course.

IsarFoto in Germany still lists the 85/1.2 btw (a high-end/nature photo
outfitter).

You can still buy the 85mm them and they are not soft wide open. I did
check on Canon's website and they DO NOT show the 85mm F1.2 as
discontinued, so I believe someone has misinformation. It sells for
$US1475. Not cheap, but if you need the speed (its 1 1/3 stops faster
than the 85mm F1.8) then there is nothing else. But if you can live with
F1.8, the 85mm F1.8 is a steal.
