noticed a comment about a Canon lens, patented 5 years earlier, 21- 30mm/f3.5-4.5, for a compact camera....as such not exotic, but apparently it used a near-Biogon design, with less than 1% distortion....hmm....

Anyone know more about that one?

And why only for a compact camera, and not for EOS?

It's much easier to design for point-and-shoots which don't have a mirror (as with the original biogon). That's also why it's easier to design super-wides for the new EF-S mount.
