I am just trying to get a ballpark number and, no, I am not expecting them to repaint the lens. The cosmetics don't bother me but I'm conservative and don't want to risk error messages suddenly appearing in the middle of a European vacation. The problem is that historically, Canon has NEVER been willing to give me a figure over the phone. They always want me to ship the item to them for an examination. John
