I thought I would pass on a little piece of
information for owners of "white" L lens who are
interested in improving their appearance.
I recently bought an eight year old 70-200mm f2.8
(non-IS) lens on ebay from a freelance newspaper
photographer. The optics and mechanics are beautiful
but the lens had a lot of little dings and paint
scratches from going in and out of a camera bag a
million times. I had purchased a can of "official"
Canon white lens lacquer paint from Canon parts a year
or so ago if I needed to touch-up my main IS lens. It
cost about $15 for a one ounce can. The color match
was TERRIBLE. The lens is a primarily a very light
beige with some grey. The Canon paint was primarily
grey with very little beige. This morning at Wal-Mart
I discovered a beautiful match:
Krylon "Satin Touch" spray paint, color 3520,
"Pebble". If you really want to be sure, the UPC no.
is 7 24504 03520 6. I sprayed some into a paper cup
and using an extremely tiny brush and eyeloupe, I got
the nicks and marks to virtually disappear. The match
was amazing.
I do not know how consistant Canon has been on color
over the years with the same model lens or among other
white lenses, but this worked for me.
My next project will be to disassemble the tripod
mount by removing the two litle screwed on cover
plates, strip the old paint and refinish it with this
spray paint. I'll let you know how it comes out.
