There is a cheap device which will does exactly this and copies filesbetween two USB mass storage devices. You could use any combination of hard drive, flash card readers, MP3 player, etc with this device as a cheap way of backing up to hard drives (especially given you can buy small 2.5" drive enclosures for peanuts these days).
The device is the "Sitcom USB On-The-Go Copy Box" and is USB2.0 compatible and might be fairly fast.
