If you want another data point, my film EOS 300 and Metz 32 exhibited this problem when used with a cheap bracket. With the 300D it isn't a problem due to the 1.6x crop factor - the only problem is that as the flash doesn't do E-TTL I have to use it in thyristor mode as TTL and A-TTL aren't supported on the digital bodies (hence the reason the built in flash is E=TTL and does a pre flash).
