I find the 45 point AF great. You can change to 11 if required - it would be 
good if it was much easier to change - and there
are other CFs to change the behaviour. It is particularly useful for using 
focus tracking. I also have a 10D, with 7 AP
points - that is far to few for me. When I do use the ECF, it usually works 
fine. If I have not used it for a bit, I spend a
little time getting used to it again, and also calibrating it. What I do find 
very useful is the eye-cup (or whatever it is
called). Costs ~�10, and helps in positioning the eye. If the eye is in the 
same position every time, then ECF should work.
This is one of the common problems that users have with it.
