The "softness" of the light is controlled by the size of the source (soft box) in relation to the subject. Generally, you'd need a medium sized soft box to be soft enough for a head and shoulders portrait.

Of course, only you can decide how soft you need the light for your style of portraits.

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a Chimera Super Pro softbox and a Canon 580ex
to go with it, but I can only find the Chimera speed ring to fit 540ez
and 550ex. Will this speedring also fit a 580ex?

Also, although this is less EOS specific. Is the XXS softbox (12"x16")
big enough for practical purposes? I'm mostly going to be using it for
portraits and close-up/macro work. It is for portraits I'm more
interested in, since I'm sure it will be enormous for macro. So would
I be better to get the 16"x22" XS ?
