It is possible to use a peanut slave in some way to trip an electronic shutter?

I don't know about that, but there is something called a lightning trigger. Since a single "bolt" of lightning is often ~5 discharges over several hundred milliseconds, it can trip the shutter and get good results.

A quick web search revealed some homemade optical triggers, but the most sensitive are ones that use radio frequency energy. The only commerical product I saw mentioned was from lightningtrigger.com (though their site was not reachable by me at this time ;-( ) A quick web search will yeild several field accounts from photographers.

Naturally you need a camera with an electric remote control socket and little lag time...
