It is possible to use a peanut slave in some way to trip an electronic
shutter?
I don't know about that, but there is something called a lightning
trigger. Since a single "bolt" of lightning is often ~5 discharges
over several hundred milliseconds, it can trip the shutter and get good
results.
A quick web search revealed some homemade optical triggers, but the
most sensitive are ones that use radio frequency energy. The only
commerical product I saw mentioned was from lightningtrigger.com
(though their site was not reachable by me at this time ;-( ) A quick
web search will yeild several field accounts from photographers.
Naturally you need a camera with an electric remote control socket and
little lag time...
