I can't seem to justify buying one at its current retail price, though it has a 
lot of features I like, those being the size and ring-type USM with FTM. Maybe 
they'll depreciate a little on the used market.

About all I can see that it does really effectively is drastically reduce the 
size of the lens. The optical performance seems to be OK as long as you're not 
shooting backlit subjects, which is a big minus in my book.

Might be better off with the "new" 70-300 IS, then, for less than half as much.

If the front of that lens doesn't rotate when it's focusing (my only real gripe 
with my 75-300IS, the "original" IS lens) then I'll definitely buy one. Mode 2 
IS would be pretty useful, too, as I shoot a lot of motorsports.
