To the group,

Last week I went to Canon Expo 2005 at the Javitz Center here in New York. The main reason for this trip was to see the 5D, and I was not disappointed. In comparison to my 1Ds, the camera is more compact and felt good in my hands. Light? Who knows - with the new 24-105mm lens on it, like a soda can full of glass, it was hefty, but not awkward.

The bright viewfinder is impressive, but what got me is the huge, gorgeous preview screen on the back. Even without a CF card, the camera will fire - a new Canon feature? - and instantly put up a non-permanent display on the camera back. As a studio shooter, I rely on my notebook computer for monitoring images. On the 5D, the preview screen looks like it can actually deliver a meaningful image to evaluate - and put a lot more fun into freehand digital shooting.

What may have been more impressive that this new camera was the scale of the show put on by Canon. The main display area at the Javitz Center is huge, and Canon rented it for two days. This was not just an open area with display booths, it was an orchestrated performance, with visitors being led from a media saturated staging area to an amphitheater show which then opened itself to the main floor.

I was truly impressed with this tour de force by Canon, highlighting this manufacturers leading role in imaging and information systems - photography, office and medical equipment, etc. It is hard to find another company able to put on such a show. Certainly not Nikon, possibly Kodak 10 or 15 years ago, but today, maybe just Apple could have the resources and the will to strut as Canon just did.
