Subject: EOS Flash Power
Since we're talking about flashes this week.
I've got a 580ex and a 550ex which I'd like to get better results from.
1. I'd like to power them better (faster recylcing) - is quantum the way
to go ?
2. Portable softboxes - I've seen photoflex and they look good - are
there alternatives ?
In case it matters, I'm using a 1DMKII.
I mostly use an 85 1.8 and 70-200LIS for my portraiture /wedding work
with the hope to get a 24-70L very soon.
Thanks,
Michael.

I just started using a Sunpak TR-2000 battery pack with my 580EX, and it
works great! It is noticeably lighter than the Quantum, and it uses a
removable "battery cluster," so you don't have to switch batteries, only
"clusters" when the charge gets low. Another plus is that it runs $249.95
at B&H, as opposed to around $500 for the Quantum Turbo 2x2, and the
clusters are only $67.95, so you can get a primary and a backup for a lot
less than two Quantum batteries cost. The only drawback, that I've found so
far, is that the clusters take a very long time to charge, and the holder is
the charging cradle, too.
As far as a portable softbox, do you mean one small enough to mount on the
flash? In that case, I've been using a Westcott Micro Apollo to excellent
effect.
