Well... look who we find here! :-)
G'mornin' Henning!
I didn't join this list, to grump endlessly abut the 17~85-EFS... my
only experience with Canon glass, so far. I joined, in order to make
a few new friends, and learn more of the Canon line.
I suppose you are right, that distortion levels well above what I'm
used to are to be expected in high ratio zoom lenses. I guess I'm
too quick to compare to my 80~200 f/4 Vario Elmar, or even my old
75~150 Auto Zuiko, but both of those would not be considered "high
ratio" zooms! But even the old Auto Zuiko was far superior in both
flare resistance, sharpness and distortion, to the 17~85!
I guess, like you, I'll continue to run each shot through PT-Lens
(being thankful such a program exists!) and quite grumping!
I must say, however, that I find the Leica lenses on the Canon 20D
to be a marvelous combination!
I am curious, however, about your 5D. I've thought about it (it
seems a viable alternative to the lovely, but horrifically expensive
DM-R!) and am concerned by something Tina Manley mentioned on
another list. She bought one and said that while the camera was
delightful, the battery life was incredibly short, compared to the
20D. Do yo find this so?
And, overall, how do you (or anybody here with one) like your 5D?
Hi David,
Your finding that the 17-85 is less flare resistant than the old
Zuiko surprises me, as I find mine to be a lot better than that.
Again, as you know I'm quite particular about distortion for some of
my stuff, but a lot is distortion sensitive, so won't be corrected.
Battery life is, like Skip wrote, not as good as with the 20D, but
acceptable unless like Tina you come from the 1DMkII. If I hung a car
battery off the bottom of my camera, I'd get more shots per charge as
well :-), but I'm delighted with the lack of weight of the 5D so I
can live with 500-600 shots per charge, and I carry extra batteries.
I'm generally very satisfied with the camera; I won't sell the 20D as
it's my backup and telephoto camera. The 5D lets me get the
architectural shots I do for my work better, due to resolution,
useability with all my wideangles including the 24TSE, 16-35 and
12-24 Sigma, as well as the 15FE, and better viewfinder. The camera's
not perfect, but it certainly is the most reasonable one for me at
this time. Its price, while significantly higher than that of the 20D
is not so high that I would be leery of trading it in when an upgrade
comes along. Following the same cycle with the 1Ds series would use
up money that is better spent on paying off my new car! Most
'upgrade' features of the 1Ds over the 5D are wasted on my use anyway.
I don't have any links to large files, but I just took a bunch of
shots last Sunday, mostly of my grandkids:
