Hi Peter,

You and I often times take a protagonist/antagonist role on the list, taken
this way we are a team of sorts offering points of view with give and take.
Please don't stop voicing your opinions, I read them carefully and seriously
consider them, you may be taking my posts the wrong way. I like the play
here and the back and forth of the list members who have helped me (yourself
included), develop my point of view over the years. So please don't stop
sharing your ideas.

As to being able to afford an EF 400 2.8L I could indeed buy one but do I
own one? Heck no, I rent an EF 400 2.8L when the job calls for it but IMO
the EF 400 2.8L has a place for the dedicated sports or light/versatile
wildlife shooter but is too narrow purpose a lens for my own lens quiver. I
prefer to keep an EF 300 2.8L in my bag for its versatility as it works
pretty well as a 390/540/780mm DSLR sports body lens. I also use it often
as a portrait lens with a FF DSLR body and also surprisingly often to shoot
exteriors.

As to shooting award winning photos I'm not that interested in taking them,
I prefer to get paid for my efforts. To get paid I need lenses and
equipment that is #1)reliable, #2)sharp & #3)see #1, this is why I'm into
the more sturdy stuff. I'm also paranoid and don't want to have to
re-shoot/schedule or deliver late because I thought I could save 10% or 15%
on hardware that took a dump on me or was flakey in the field.

Just my take on it, and yes YMMV.

Cheers/Chip
