I have both lenses and am about to sell the f/4 because I just never use it anymore. There's nothing wrong with this lens. I was perfectly happy with it before I got the f/2.8 IS. Once I had them both, I thought I'd use the f/4 when I wanted to go low profile or pack light. I found that given the choice, though, I virtually always go for the faster lens with IS. As soon as you're slapping a long white lens on the camera, the low profile ship has sailed. Shooting indoors or at the fringes of the day, the 2.8 and IS make a big difference. For wildlife or candid street shots, the faster AF is also noticable. Personally, I do perceive a difference between the two shooting wide open. While the f/4 is good, the f/2.8 is snap, crackle, pop. For portraits, I think you'll be happier with the 2.8. For your 1.6x body, consider that you can add a 2x extender to the f2.8 and still AF (though more slowly) at f5.6 and an effective focal length of 840mm. I agree with the comments that the close focus isn't what it should be on this otherwise stellar lens. I always have a 25mm extension tube in the bag and need to use it more than I ought to with this lens.
