The 16-35 F2.8 offers a stop more and is sharper than the 17-40L. My
friend has the 17-40 and he is not impressed with it at all.

The luminos Site and Fred Miranda differ with you.
The Luminos site talks about the better contrast, sharpness and less
flare with the 17-40.
Miranda gives the 16-35 8.8 and the 17-40 9.0
I am quite pleased with my 17-40 bought after the review in Practical
Photgraphy gave it high marks.
Don't know what to tell your friend.
