Replying to Tom:

I think you are batteling the quirks of automatic exposure, not the

equipment itself. Realize that your flash has limited coverage. So

unless you dial your exposure in to allow for some background detail,

the background will be black.

One way to deal with this could be to have a slave flash illuminating

the background. But this will take a lot of practice to get right and

I bet the background flash would be in the wrong spot during the

wedding anyway. But it could make for a cool shot.

I can test my 420EX as slave unit. But don't know if this will suffice or
just make things harder.

Moreover I will be without flash on the eos 650.

Beware that there is some light loss associated with the diffusers.

According to LumiQuest, their softboxes "eat" about one stop of light.

According to Sto-Fen's FAQ (http://www.stofen.com/FAQ/index.htm), the

flash coverage is reduced by a factor of 2.5 when the OmniBounce is

used. This corresponds to a light loss of 2.65 stops (#stops =

log(2.5)/log(sqrt(2)) = 2.65).

No problem for the coverage reduction. The background will be dark in any
way.. I will try the stofen solution because I hope it will decrease the
harsness (if I can say so) of direct flash impact.

You suggest me to set the 580 ex to +2/3 or +1 exp compensation?

Are you expecting your digital shots to not be sharp? I sugest you

make a comparison between the two. Shoot with the film you intend to

shoot during the wedding. Shoot digital side by side. Compare the

results. I think you'd be surprised. And NO... I do NOT wish to

restart the digital vs film debacle! :-)

No no no debacle! Yust speaking of the lens the 50mm mark 1 is quite sharp
(very noisy, but sharp :) :) )

Better yet, ask him to set the lighting to what it will be during the
wedding.

Yes, for sure or convince him to turn all the lights on also in the wedding
date! :)

Thanks Tom!
