Paul,

E-TTL II is a feature of the CAMERA not the flash. 

E-TTL II will work equally as well with any EX flash including
550EX,420EX, and 220EX.

The main benefit of E-TTL II is that is designed to eliminate under
exposure that occurs with straight reflections from the subject.

Maybe I am asking something stupid but here I go

Is there a way to do a firmrare upgrade on an EOS 1v in order to obtain E-TTL 
II out of the same Hardware?
