To Cotty, Tom and the group,

Thank you for the timely responses. You have confirmed my suspicion that moving the small pin on the Canon lens mount is what ultimately produce the "ERR 01" whan I use a manual, non-Canon lens.

OK, I could file off a small portion of the ProOptic (extension tube) lens flanges. Then, the pin would not move when the lens is seated, and the camera would fire. Now, what happens when I try to use regular Canon EF lenses? Will the 1Ds no longer recognize them, and I loose all automation?

When I first messed about with a custom mount for attaching a Pentax K
lens onto a D60, I got a similar error. IIRC I had to machine a small
part of one of the mounting flanges off to allow the camera to fire. The
basis of the conversion was a simple EF/M42 adapter of the type that can
be readily purchased from camera shops or eBay sellers. The version I
got would not allow the D60 to fire when mounted, until I filed a small
portion off. I think it was pretty obvious which portion. I confirmed it
by not locating the mount all the way into the lock position where I was
able to fire the shutter, yet another short twist into the locked
position and no go.
